Steps
1. Cut a 1 inch (2.5cm) diameter dowel rod to the desired length. Most saltwater topwaters are between 3 inches and 6 inches (7-15 cm).
- If you use wood that is too soft, the fish could destroy the lure. Use wood sturdy enough to handle a fish strike.
- Use stainless steel hardware to prevent rusting in saltwater.
- Lacquer the outside to help preserve the lure.
- Googly craft eyes or sequins work well for the eyes.
- Single hooks may be used in place of treble hooks.
- A wood burner can be used to add designs in the side of the lure.
- Use acrylic paints, not water-based.
- Split ring pliers can aid in installing the split rings onto the threaded screw eyes and attaching the treble hooks.
Warnings
Wear safety gloves and goggles whenever using the saw, drill press, and belt sander.
